Bennison, 1991 ****************************** ARTICLE ********************************* The Family of Rev. Ludwig Lupp of Pennsylvania Victor L. Bennison [A draft of a chapter from "The Early Loop Family in America", in preparation, (c) 1991] Ludwig LUPP [Johann Henrich(4), Henrich(3), August(2), Anthony(1)] was the ninth of twelve children born to Johann Henrich LUPP and Anna Elisabeth RUBSAMEN. He was born January 7, 1733, at Hof, Hesse-Nassau, Germany, and christened January 14. His father was the schoolmaster in Marienberg parish and resided in the village of Hof. Ludwig was confirmed there in 1747. At the age of 20 he left for America, arriving in Philadelphia on September 29, 1753 on the ship Rowand. In "Ministers of the German Reformed Congregations in Pennsylvania", the author, Hinke, states, "Shortly after his arrival Lupp settled near Strausstown, in what is now Upper Tulpehocken Township, Berks County. Here he was at first the schoolmaster of the parochial school. But, owing to the lack of duly ordained ministers, he gradually assumed all the duties of a pastor... He was one of the numerous independent ministers... as there were not enough ordained ministers to supply all the Reformed congregations." After serving the Strausstown and Bern parishes in northern Berks County for many years he moved to the next county west, and served many parishes in what were then Lancaster and Dauphin Counties, all near the town of Lebanon. Quoting further from Hinke: "During his ministry in Lebanon Lupp was on friendly terms with the Moravian pastors, with the result that we find a number of interesting references to [him] in the Hebron Diary: 1789, October 1st, was the funeral of our sainted Bro. Balthasar Orth. The Reformed pastor Lupp was also present. After the sermon I had a friendly conversation with him, to our mutual enjoyment. 1789, October 30th. I was in town and heard the Reformed pastor Lupp deliver a funeral sermon. I rejoiced over his evangelical discourse, since he is at other times a legalistically pious man, who attacks sins and evils with the thundering words of the law, which may result in shocks, but in the end the sheep that go astray are not sufficiently directed to the source of healing and life. 1791, June 11th. I went to town, because the Reformed pastor Lupp had requested me to be present at the presentation of the children, whom he confirmed today and who attended the Lord's Supper for the first time. At first there was a preparatory sermon, and then the fifty children were each twice asked to answer questions of their catechism. There was at this important transaction in the whole church a continued weeping and the young hearts were deeply touched. It lasted about six hours until it was all over. I took hearty leave from the minister and was grateful I had come." Hinke further states: "This is one of the few records of a confirmation service that has come down from the eighteenth century." Ludwig Lupp married three times. We only know the names of two of his wives. The one by whom he had all his children was Anna Maria SPATH, whom he married in 1756. She was born April 5, 1732, probably in Hesse-Nassau, Germany, the daughter of Johann Georg SPADT and his wife Eliza Caterina. She died September 27, 1794, probably in Lebanon, Dauphin (now Lebanon) County, Pennsylvania, and her burial is recorded at the Salem Lutheran Church there. His third wife was Catherine PETERS. He married her on February 1, 1796 and apparently had no children by her. He died June 28, 1798, in Lebanon. His tombstone read [it was originally in German and no longer exists, having been replaced with a newer, less informative stone in English]: Here sleeps a grey head Ludwig Lupp Minister for 12 years in Lebanon 1733, he was born January 7, 1733 Married 3 times He had 12 children, of whom 5 survive him. He died June 28, 1798 His age 65 years, 5 mos. and 3 weeks. It was my profession and my worldly office To teach what God and Jesus pleased To preach the gospel pure and true And to call sinners to pennance, attonement, and penitence So adieu! Friends, follow my teaching and my word Then we will see each other again at heaven's gate. Hinke provides us with a tribute to Ludwig Lupp composed by Rev. Henry Wagner, one of Ludwig's successors: "He was not a man of classical education, and had not been regularly prepared for the ministry; he was, however, a well-read man, and pious servant of Christ, and much devoted in his pastoral attention to the people of his charge. It was his regular custom, in is pastoral visits, wherever he remained over night, to have the neighbors invited, in order to spend the evening with them in prayer and religious conversation. He seems to have been untiring in his pastoral labors to promote true piety and godliness among the people entrusted to his care, as a true shepherd of his flock." According to a history of Lebanon County, "his widow survived him, resided near Moravian Church about four miles from Elizabethtown where she died." She left a will dated January 18, 1821, in which she mentions, apparently, only her children by her first husband, namely: Christiana BOORMAN, Elizabeth BARNETT, Catherine WISLER, and Jacob PETERS. Her will was probated in March, 1827. The children of Ludwig LUPP and Anna Maria SPATH were: 1. Catherine LUPP, b. He apparently married two or three times. His first wife was named Catherine, surname unknown. She was the mother of at least his first child, and one source says his first five children. Philip may have moved before 1790 to Virginia, possibly to Rockingham County. But by September, 1801, he and his brother Simon had bought land in Augusta County, Virginia. There Philip married his last wife, Catherine MINGA, daughter of Henry MINGA, on October 14, 1805. Philip was a farmer. They were censused in Augusta County in 1810 along his brother Simon and son Christian. The spelling of the last appears in almost all Virginia records as "LOOP", and that is how the spelling remained for all of Ludwig's descendants. Loop was serving at the headquarters of the Third Division, XXVII Corps when the armies settled down into seige around Atlanta in late July. Here, in two letters to his wife, he describes a portion of the action in the Battle of Atlanta on July 22 and life in the trenches once the siege had begun. His off-handed way of discussing the death and destruction around him may be an attempt to downplay for his wife the danger he routinely faced. She was pregnant. Loop survived the war and returned to his wife and young children in Boone County, Illinois, where he practiced law successfully. We are grateful to Mr. Frank Crawford of Caledonia, Illinois, for sharing these letters with us. Mr. Crawford explains that the letters came to him after Major Loop's home was torn down in the 1970s. The papers were retrieved from a truck hauling away debris. [This is Charles B. LOOP who married Maria J. PIERCE. He was the son of Henry LOOP, grandson of Peter LOOP, Jr., and Great-grandson of Capt. Peter LOOP.] Head Quarters 3rd Div 17th A.C. July 26th 1864 My Dear Wife, I am still all right and hope to remain so. Our corps has not been generally engaged with the enemy since the 22nd although we still hold our position as we did then and are constantly skirmishing with them. I ahve nothing new to write you to day but as you must be very anxious to hear from this part of the Confederacy as often as possible I will write a few words. I shall not attempt to describe the engagement of the 22nd for it would take a good deal more paper and time than I have to spare. Suffice it to say that the enemy turned our flank or rather got in our rear and attacked our rear and flank at the same time in immense force, charging us at the point of the bayonet and our fellows repulsing three distinct assaults from the rear and flank and two from the front, nearly all of them at the same time. Our division would not leave their works but would fight a while on one side and then would spring to the other and would fight there till it got hot and change again. The 20th Illinois (Lt. Col. Dan Bradley) was almost entirely wiped out but would not move an inch. They only have 23 men left (for duty). Bradley is safe and remained with his men all the time fighting with his sword, revolver and fists. His praise is in every body's mouth. Very many individuals both officers and men greatly distinguished themselves and a good many laid down their lives as bravely as men ever could - the loss in our division foots up about as I wrote you the other day (1,100) half of that number were taken prisoners or nearly that number. The loss in the corps was about 2,500 all told and in front and in rear or around the corps not less than 2,500 dead Rebels were buried by us and delivered to the enemy. So this whole loss could not have been less than from twelve to fifteen thousand putting it at a low estimate for prisoners and wounded. General Sherman says the 17th A.C. out did itself and the only unmilitary move that they made was not to surrender. The army mourns the loss of our beloved army commander Maj. Genl. McPherson. Every one loved him. I saw him and spoke with him not ten minutes before he was killed. He was smiling as usual. Of the 95th, Lt. Farnum was slightly wounded in the head by a piece of shell. Wm. Marshall of Co. C was mortally wounded and died night before last. Sergt. Sanders of Co. A (had a) finger shot off and spent ball in calf of his leg. Sanders & Farnum doing tip top. The Liut. is with the boys in the trenches. The troops are in fine spirits. My bed fellow was wounded and taken prisoner (Capt. Raymond, Pro. Marshall of Div). I came very near being taken also with him. We were riding together or near together and were into the Johnys before we were aware of their presence, but I will quit now. Good Bye, Your Charlie. [addendum] Capt Gilman of the 15th Ill. was wounded severly. I understand he was acting engineer officer of the 4th Div 17th A.C. I have not seen him since he was wounded. The 15th regiment was not in the fight. Your letter of July 13th was received last night. I am sorry you are not feeling well. Hope you will get some "Hyosciamus" or something else so your nerves will keep quiet. Kiss Bub for Pa Pa, and accept all my love. Head Quarters 3rd Div., 17th A.C. before Atlanta, Ga Aug 12th 1864. My Dear Wife, Hear I come again "All right as usual." I have nothing to write that is new or interesting, but the afternoon is very warm and I have concluded not to go out to the advance line till towards sundown unless something turns up more than common. I have been out all the forenoon and the shells are dancing around so lively that it was rather unhealthy to come back till there was a little cessation in the firing. I embraced the first opportunity and came to dinner. Genl. (Thomas E.G.) Ransom with his usual energy has planted a battery just to the left of our division right in the teeth of the enemy only about 30 or 40 rods from their heaviest fortifications frowning down upon his little gopher holes with their heavy and numerous guns. They did not disturb them much till he had his work done on the supposition that they could knock him all to pieces whenever they chose. This morning he got ready for them and opened fire whereupon they opened about 20 guns upon him at short range throwing every kind of projectile. Their fire was very rapid and heavy - almost every shot striking the work, but Ransom's works are never made to be knocked down or his guns to be silenced. They kept eight at their work just as though there were no storm of shot and shell knocking every thing around and about them. The enemy kept at him for two hours with all the vigor they could rais but failed to silence a single one of his guns for a moment. On the contrary I saw one of the enemy's guns thrown high into the air from his shots and the boys all say there were three of the enemy's guns served the same way. So much for our side. There were only two wounded of the battery boys in the fort. We are building a work very similar to Ransom's in our front, only ours will be longer and heavier and will contain eight heavy guns instead of four as his does. The 95th boys are all right and are anxiously expecting the regiment. I have no doubt but what it will be here in the course of the next 10 or 12 days and then the boys will feel a good deal better. Bob Hannah is well. I suppose Lt. Keeler is at home by this time and in the full enjoyment of a citizen's life. I think a suit of citizen's clothes would fit me amazingly well but I see no show of getting any for a year yet but can't tell. I have not received a letter from you since the one dated the 31st of July when you did not know whether I was dead or alive. We have had four mails since but no letters for me - not one: not a paper or anything else, but it is all right. I think I know something about how you must feel now a days if you feel any as you used to under similar circumstances. The news from Grant is not so charming as we might wish, but the news from Mobile is highly gratifying. So far as we can learn our army is fortifying and digging closer to the enemy every day and drawing the reins tighter and tighter. Either Hood's army or ours will get whipped before a great while, but can't say exactly when. I think it will be Hood that will get whipped too. I think our army is on the increase now a days, but everything is contraband. My health is "tip top" and the weather is quite agreeable, days hot all day long, nights, ah, so cool that if they would only "dry up" the shooting through the night the sleeping would be magnificent but they will disturb a fellow's slumbers any way you can fix it. Last night our skirmishers advanced a little and broke up a Rebel prayer meeting. They were just asking the Lord to paralize the Yankees and wipe them from the face of the earth & all within hearing distance of our main line but behind a small ridge from the skirmish line and only a few rods from them. The boys crept up to the top of the ridge and poured several volleys into them and then "dried up" very quick and went to shooting. Then our boys got to their holes again. "War is a big thing" on wheels. Write often and think often of your loving husband away down in Dixie. Tell Ally Pa Pa is all right. Good Bye my Dear Mollie, Charlie. 2. We do not know who this Erastus is. His dead son was named Peter Loop, see 4. Garden City, Rock Island, and Central Hotels, J. Calverly, Proprietor, Chicago, Ill., April 14, 1903. Dear Mr. Loop, I cannot collect your son's wages. It must be a near relative. In regard to his death let me say that I believe it was an accident. They went to bed as usual and in the morning we smelled gas and forced the door open and found the gas jet on full and both of them dead. I think they either blew the gas out or accidently turned the gas on after they turned it off. You have my deepest sympathy. they were both nice behaved young men in the House and my heart was deeply touched concerning them. You have been made aware of their relations to the House I perceive. Now I have not touched or even looked in to his grip or telescope and do not intend. Should you find it convenient to come to Chicago please come or send anyone that is coming this way with a note. God bless you in my prayers. Yours ever, James Calverley. 4. March 13, 1903, Mr. Erastus Loop for Peter Loop, dec'd, debtor to H. M. Jones was an escaped slave. He ran away from his plantation in Virginia in June of 1844 and arrived in Elmira July 5, 1844. Sometime between 1844 and 1847 he went to school in Elmira to read and write: "John was without the slightest education and although there were two schools in Elmira neither one would admit John W. Jones. Not long after he met the late judge, Ariel S. Thurston and the judge perceiving the young man's latent ability asked him why he did not learn to read and write. John replied that nobody would teach him. The judge finally proposed to John that he should come into his family and by this means John finally was received into one of the schools and seated next to a boy aged 14, named LOOP. This lad took kindly to John and gave him every assistance in his power, and indeed, said Jones later in talking about it: this lad was the real teacher who took pains and taught me to read and write." +++++++++++++++++++++++ NOTES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS +++++++++++++++++++++++ 1. It occurred to me that since descendents of Ludwig LUPP lived in Virginia and Tennessee during the Civil War, that there may have been some Confederate LOOP's as well as Union soldiers. Does anyone know of any? William Alexander LOOP of Virginia is said to have died during the Civil War, but I have no details. John LOOP of Texas had two sons who died in the Civil War, probably fighting for the South. Ludwig's son Philip figures as a jury member in a trial at a Confederate POW camp in Botetourt County, VA (see Vital Data #8 above), but it isn't clear if he acted as a civilian or was in the military. Since many other of Ludwig's descendants then lived in Ohio and Indiana, there may have been some close LOOP cousins fighting one another during the battles of the war. 2. William H. Loop - Could you provide me with a family group sheet for Joseph Lewis Loop? 3. Joan Loop - Could you provide me with a family group sheet for John William Loop? 4. Bob Loop - thanks for submitting all the information on the Canadian Loop's. I will incorporate much of it into the appropriate chapter. Some of the material appears in the Vital Data section above. The census record for Peter Loop you found is very exciting. This is obviously a previously unknown child of Nathaniel. I was thinking of updating Nathaniel Loop's family group sheet for this issue, but I'm considering doing the lead article on him in the next issue, so I'm not going to include his group sheet at this time. 5. Mary J. Harris sent us some new information on the Rodney LOOP she is trying to hook into the earlier LOOP's. He married Ida Josephine SWARTOUT. They had two sons, Wendell and Archie Dean LOOP. Archie married Essie MAHAM of Warren, Ohio. Rodney had brothers Floyd LOOP and Ernest LOOP. He had two uncles Washington LOOP and Edward LOOP (who married Helen KING) and an Aunt Lib CHILDS. I still can't place him. If anybody out there sees how Rodney LOOP fits in, let us know. See his photo in this issue.
